Art in Paris & Environs: from Monet to Picasso
Join author, lecturer, and historian Jim McAllister for a small group (max 16) tour of Paris and its environs, exploring the region that inspired many of the artistic and literary giants of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Tour the historic neighborhoods of Montmartre and Montparnasse, and venture outside the city to the town of Giverny, where Monet lived and painted; Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh spent his final days; and the village of Barbizon by the Forest of Fontainebleau, whose rugged landscape inspired generations of artists.
Jim McAllister has taught courses and frequently lectured on topics related to the turn of the century Paris art scene. His travels to Paris and nearby art “shrines” laid the foundation for this exciting trip.

Art in Paris & Environs Itinerary
Depart the U.S., fly overnight to Paris
Day 1: Arrive in Paris and check into your charming, art-themed hotel. Enjoy an afternoon bateau mouche cruise on the Seine, followed by a welcome dinner with wine.
Day 2: Join Jim McAllister for a morning walking tour of historic Montmartre, past sites related to Renoir, Picasso, Utrillo and many other painters. Enjoy lunch together at a neighborhood restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Musée D’Orsay with a local guide.
Day 3: Excursion by train to the village of Barbizon and the Forest of Fountainbleau. Visit the Museum of the School Barbizon Painters and see the landscape that inspired the painters of the Naturalist Movement, from Corot to Manet. Return to Paris in the afternoon for free time and dinner on your own.
Day 4: Explore the historic neighborhood of Montparnasse, home to many artists and writers, on a morning walking tour with Jim. In the afternoon, cross the river to the Marais district for a visit to the Picasso Museum.
Day 5: Join Jim for a full day excursion to Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh spent his final months. Walk through town to see the church he painted and the cemetery where he is buried. Eat lunch together at the inn where Van Gogh lived and created more than 80 paintings. In the afternoon, visit the Impressionist exhibit at nearby Château d’Auvers, a 17th century castle and gardens. Return to Paris in the evening.
Day 6: Travel to the town of Giverny for a tour of Monet’s house and garden, where he painted some of his greatest masterpieces. After lunch together, visit the Giverny Impressionist Museum before returning to Paris for dinner on your own.
Day 7: Join Jim for a walking tour of Montparnasse and the Latin Quarter, with stops at the Luxembourg Gardens and Shakespeare & Company bookstore, a haunt of many literary giants. Enjoy a free afternoon to explore Paris before meeting for a delicious farewell dinner with wine.
Day 8: Say au revoir to Paris and depart for the flight home.
