Andalusia and Extremadura, Spain Itinerary

Depart the US, flying overnight to Rome

DAY 1, MADRID: Arrive at the Madrid Airport and take an afternoon tour of the city, including visits to the Palacio Real and Prado Museum before enjoying a relaxing welcome dinner.

DAY 2, TOLEDO: Travel to Toledo where we will stay in a former archbishop's palace turned elegant hotel. With an expert guide, visit the ancient cathedrals and narrow streets of Toledo, home to the painter El Greco. Toledo is a treasure of influences: Moorish, Jewish, and Christian.

DAY 3, TOLEDO: Enjoy another relaxing day in Toldeo. Go shopping and enjoy an introduction to Spanish pottery before enjoying lunch at a local vineyard. Enjoy the afternoon to yourselves.

DAYS 4-5, CÓRDOBA: One of the greatest cities in the western world, Córdoba’s mix of Moorish and Christian architecture will take your breath away. Stay in the heart of the old town. Guided visit of the fabulous Mezquita.

DAY 6, GRANADA: Enjoy a day trip to Granada. Visit the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella, and then spend the day exploring one of the most important monuments in all of Spain—the Alhambra. Set high on a hill, this remarkable fortress is brimming with palaces and gardens dating from the 14th to 16th centuries. Continue to our next destination: Nerja.

DAY 7, NERJA: Wake up in Nerja, a lively resort town on the Costa del Sol, Spain’s “sun coast”. Visit the nearby picturesque white-washed hilltop village of Frigiliana and enjoy exploring the narrow streets, shops, and tavernas of downtown Nerja.

DAY 8-9, SEVILLA: Enjoy beautiful Costa del Sol views along the Mediterranean, then stop in the mountain town of Ronda for lunch. Continue on to the sunny city of Sevilla for a three-night stay. Our lovely hotel is in the heart of the old town within walking distance of many sights: the largest cathedral in all of Europe, the majestic tomb of Christopher Colombus, the Plaza de España with its stunning azulejo tiled bridges, and the magnificent royal palace and gardens. Take an Andalusian cooking class followed by a wonderful dinner.

DAYS 10-11, CÁCERES: Head north into the rugged region of Extremadura to stay in Cáceres for two nights. This medieval town is a unique blend of Roman, Islamic, Northern Gothic, and Italian Renaissance styles. Visit nearby Trujillo, a beautiful city that was the birthplace of several conquistadors, including Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of Peru.

DAY 12-13, Ávila: On our way to Ávila, stop in Salamanca. Founded in 1218, La Universidad de Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain and the third oldest in the western world. Then head to our destination for the night, Ávila. On day two in Ávila, take a walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage city and enjoy a gastronomic dinner in the evening.

DAY 14, Madrid: Traveling back to Madrid, stop in Segovia for a tour of the city, including the Segovia Aqueduct and the Alcazar of Segovia. Arriving in Madrid, check into your hotel and enjoy a grand farewell dinner.

DAY 15: Depart from the Madrid Airport.
