Piedmont & the Italian Alps Itinerary

Day 1
Upon arrival at the Milan Malpensa Airport, we are transferred to the Piedmont Langhe wine region. Our base from which to visit this beautiful area is the hill-top village of La Morra. Our tiny, elegant hotel has its own wine bar. From here we can easily walk everywhere in the village and enjoy the views of the surrounding rolling hills that give birth to some of the best wines in the world.  After a welcome reception, we enjoy dinner in the village.
Overnight: La Morra Meals: D
Day 2
This morning we head to the countryside to go on a truffle hunt with a local trifolao and his dog. This is serious truffle country. We continue on to visit one of the many wineries producing the world-famous Barolo wine. Here we have lunch with a wine tasting and food pairing. We return to La Morra for free time to explore. Dinner tonight is a gourmet affair at a fabulous Michelin-starred restaurant featuring a wine cellar with over 60,000 bottles, half of which are local Barolo and Barbaresco.
Overnight: La Morra Meals: B, L, D
Day 3
We drive to the attractive village of Pollenzo (ancient Pollentia), a UNESCO World Heritage site where Carlo Petrini, forefather of the Slow Food movement, founded the University of Gastronomic Sciences. We visit the Wine Bank, a unique museum explaining the history of Italian wines. Here we enjoy a wine tasting workshop.  We continue on to Alba, the city of the 100 towers, for lunch at leisure, a guided walking tour, and some time to explore on our own.  Our evening in La Morra is free.

Day 4
This morning we drive to the beautiful capital of Piedmont, Torino (Turin). We take a guided tour of the city that includes the Parco del Valentino, along the Po River; the Monte dei Cappuccini— the circular Neoclassical Gran Madre di Dio church, inspired by the Roman Pantheon; and the grand Piazza Vittorio Veneto. At our luxury hotel in the city center we enjoy a welcome aperitivo the Italian way before heading to a local restaurant for a special dinner.
Overnight: Torrino Meals: B, D
Day 5
After breakfast we meet our guide to continue our tour. We see the extravagant red brick façade of the Palazzo Carignano, Piazza Castello (Castle Square), the elegant Royal Palace, the majestic San Carlo Square, as well as some antique courtyards, real hidden gems of Torino. We visit the Mole Antonelliana, symbol of Turin and former Jewish synagogue, which now hosts the amazing Cinema Museum. Here we take the panoramic lift up to a terrace from which you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city. We enjoy lunch at a 19th century elegantly decorated café. The afternoon is free for us to stroll on our own or to visit one of the great museums of Torino. Dinner is on our own at one of the many charming restaurants around our hotel.
Overnight: Torrino Meals: B, L
Day 6
We begin today with a visit to Turin’s famous market, Porta Palazzo, where we meet our chef. She helps us to shop for the ingredients of our hands-on cooking class. We learn how to select the season’s finest vegetables, herbs, spices and fruits. In our class we learn how to prepare both typical Piedmontese and northern Italian dishes. This evening we enjoy the dinner we have prepared in an elegant historic private mansion. After typical Turin appetizers in the salon,  dinner is served in the beautiful dining room.
Overnight: Torrino Meals: B, D
Day 7
Leaving Turin, we take a short drive to the striking Reggia di Venaria, one of the most amazing Royal Residencies of Italy. After a guided tour of the palace, we have lunch, and then continue to the alpine pearl of Courmayeur, nestled in the Italian Western Alps. Take some time to relax and then enjoy a gentle walk around the village. We can choose one of the many enticing restaurants in the village for dinner on our own.

Day 8
This morning we visit Aosta, capital of the small region called Valle d’Aosta (Aosta Valley). The city was founded by the Romans in 25 B.C. Many traces of that time are still visible, such as the Arch of Augustus, the Porta Praetoria, the Roman theater, and the town walls. We enjoy a guided walking tour of the center and visit its striking Roman remains.

After free time for lunch, we visit the medieval castle of Fénis. We then sample the delicious Alpine cheese made with milk from unique cows from the Aosta Valley—the Italian Pezzata Rossa and the Pezzata Nera cows. Of course the cheese goes best with a good glass of wine.  We return to Courmayeur for some time to relax before a gourmet dinner in the village.
